November - 20196 logisticstechoutlook.comLinda James Managing Editoreditor@logisticstechoutlook.comRegardless of the mode of transport to move items--land, air, water, or a mix thereof--logistics organizations have a ton on their plate with regard to technology advancements. As new innovations are introduced in the way goods are purchased and sold, logistics companies must remain flexible and open to the industry's coordinated technological efforts or simply get left behind in the cut-throat digital worldwide economy. In the recent past, we have seen technologies such as AI, machine learning, IoT, and robotics literally change the logistics industry from the inside-out. Unlike earlier, when various stakeholders in logistics dealt with a highly manual and hyper-fragmented process, they can now sit back, relax, and allow intelligent algorithms to automate the process of matching shipments with load capacity. Amazingly, automated matching has proven to get better and faster with increased shipment loads (since it is easier to find a relevant match and optimize routes). The routing/matching algorithms are also lowering costs incurred from `empty miles,' the distance traveled by drivers with empty trailers, and subsequently lowering air pollution.Lest we forget, robotics has transformed the warehousing processes in logistics. Through new-age fulfillment centers, ecommerce giants are integrating robotics into sorting, picking, packaging, and shipping products. However, a concerted effort is being made to use robots as an extension of the workforce rather than replacing human beings altogether. Meanwhile, blockchain has helped logistics firms gain more transparency and accountability in managing and tracking documentation and assets across the supply chain process. Besides improving their service levels through end-to-end visibility of the status of every shipment, blockchain has improved on-time rates and allowed for proactive incident management. The technology has also introduced smart contracts to streamline the post-shipment cycle. Entering 2020, logistics startups are already planning to leverage the all-new Smart Road technology to bring innovations to roads and highways across the country. For example, by integrating solar panels into hundreds of miles of asphalt surfaces, they can generate energy, reroute traffic, melt snow, and eventually direct autonomous vehicles. In this edition, we bring you the story of FreightVerify, a cloud-based company focused on transportation visibility. At the core of FreightVerify's offerings is a shipper-centric platform that provides predictive, real-time transportation visibility at every step of the supply chain.
