Easing Supply Chain Management with Digital Transportation

Could you briefly discuss your professional journey and the different roles you have served?

I feel fortunate to have worked in various industries throughout my career. I started in the automotive industry, designing vehicles for original equipment manufacturers, and then moved on to work for automotive suppliers and aftermarket retailers. Later, I transitioned to the durable goods industry, working for companies like Whirlpool, and to retail, with stints at OfficeMax and Walgreens. I also spent a decade in management consulting with firms like Ernst and Whinney, Ernst and Young, and A.T. Kearney, where I had the opportunity to work with different companies in a consulting role.

Throughout my career, I have held leadership positions, including board membership at Advanced Autoparts and advising private equity investment organizations such as New State Capital. I am proud to have published two articles in the Harvard Business Review and a book on supply chain management.

As of April, I have retired from my position at Advanced Autoparts. It’s been a fulfilling journey, and I’m excited to see what new adventures lie ahead.

What, according to you, are some of the challenges in today’s digital transportation space?

In my experience, supply chain management is crucial for companies in various industries, including manufacturers, retailers, and distributors. Done right, it heavily relies on information technology and digitalization. A well-designed supply chain requires a digital twin or analog of the physical flow of inventory, which can be represented digitally. This enables customers to see what they want and when they can get it, while allowing everyone involved in the supply chain, from the supplier to the enterprise to the customer, to see what’s where and when it will be available.

However, achieving this is easier said than done. Supply chain management involves coordinating processes across different functions, and it requires people to coordinate their efforts to achieve specific results on behalf of the customer. Whether it’s a patient waiting for medication or an implant, or a customer waiting for a delivery, or hoping to find a specific product in a store, the challenge of digitalizing supply chain management is significant and requires careful orchestration. Nonetheless, with the right systems in place, supply chain digitization can significantly enhance the customer experience and improve business outcomes.

Are there significant trends you notice in the marketplace that are solving these challenges?

The latest generation of supply chain systems represents a significant leap in terms of capability and innovation. While the first generation of systems were mainframe-based, and the second generation was server-based, the third generation is cloud-based, enabling businesses to buy software and automation as a service. This allows companies to potentially bypass the challenges of transitioning from legacy systems to new ones. However, the biggest challenge in the transition from legacy to cloud-based systems is the period of coexistence, where businesses have to simultaneously maintain one foot in the legacy environment while moving the other into the new system. This coexistence period can be challenging, as legacy systems are often undocumented, and the people who developed them are no longer available.

The challenge of converting from legacy to cloud-based systems is akin to what happened with SAP implementations in the past, where many failed installations occurred, causing significant disruptions for businesses. For example, my first Harvard Business Review article was about addressing a failed SAP installation at Whirlpool. The key issue is that the new cloud[1]based systems often have many different modules and capabilities, while the old legacy systems are not well documented and do not necessarily have people available who understand how everything works. Therefore, during the transition period, it can be difficult to replicate the value-based elements of the old system in the new one while taking advantage of the new system’s capabilities.

Despite the challenges, transitioning to cloud-based supply chain systems is crucial for businesses, and many Fortune 500 companies are currently facing this challenge. With careful planning and execution, it is possible to successfully make the transition and reap the benefits of cloud-based systems.

How do you envision the future of digital transportation?

In my view, organizations will become more agile and nimble in their approach to digital transformation by breaking it down into modules, similar to building with Lego blocks. By creating standardized Lego blocks, organizations can build a wide range of things using those blocks, but in a modular and phased approach. This will help organizations to transition from the old to the new more effectively and efficiently.

The key to successful digital transformation is to think big and bold, while implementing it in bite-sized pieces. This approach will help organizations to minimize the risk of disruption, maintain continuity of service, and adapt to changing market conditions.

What are some of the important strategies a leader should know to maximize digital transportation? What would be your piece of advice to beginners in the domain?

Maintaining an unwavering commitment to keeping customers satisfied is essential. Regardless of the changes an enterprise may undergo, customer service should always be the top priority. This is particularly crucial in large organizations, where the complexities of projects can lead to a loss of focus on the organization’s goals and the needs of its customers.

Leaders should also adopt a systems thinking approach. This involves considering how different pieces fit together in the context of the whole system and enterprise, while still serving customers. By viewing the organization as a system and understanding the interdependencies between different elements, leaders can better identify opportunities for improvement and optimize processes to deliver exceptional customer experiences. In essence, becoming a systems thinker is key to effectively managing the complexities of digital transformation while ensuring customer satisfaction remains at the forefront.
