Logistics Robots
Any autonomous device or system used to optimize safety, automate product flows, and increase efficiency in warehouse operations is referred to as a logistics robot.
These robots are becoming increasingly common as new technologies are implemented in warehouse activity, such as goods receipt, storage, stock management, order processing, and shipping. These autonomous solutions can handle tasks such as order preparation, product rack storage, and product transfers between locations.
An increasing number of companies are considering integrating robots into their logistical processes to reduce errors and increase efficiency.
Robots Used in Logistics
Several devices and robots are used in logistics automation to expedite procedures, save logistical costs, and lower the possibility of mishaps. The following robots can be used, depending on the tasks completed:
Goods Receipt and Dispatch:
Logistics robots, such as automatic truck loading and unloading systems, can perform product receiving and dispatch activities. These systems allow pallets to be inserted and removed from vehicles autonomously and with little operator assistance. The two primary warehouse operations with the most significant daily movement rates, product receiving and dispatch, can also be accelerated with automatic conveyors for boxes and pallets.
Storage Robots:
This category includes stacker cranes, notable for their ability and skill when storing and removing goods from the racks. They can handle both pallets and boxes (miniload). Single-mast, twin-mast, and AS/RS trilateral stacker cranes are among the various varieties of stacker cranes. These logistics robots automatically insert and remove pallets from the racks as they go vertically and horizontally through the storage aisles. The automatic Pallet Shuttle is another popular automated option for businesses with a high throughput of goods in and out. Pallet loading and unloading are accelerated by an electric shuttle that slides through the storage channels of this small storage system.
Order Picking:
AS/RS best shows the concept of logistics robots in order preparation for boxes. A conveyor and a stacker crane for boxes can be a part of a single storage system; in this setup, operators stay at their pick stations and prepare orders using the goods-to-person technique. Industrial robotic arms, designed to execute pick and place operations—moving items from one area to another and arranging them in a different location—are an additional alternative for picking assistance.
Internal Goods Movements:
Because they enable the construction of various configurations to link the different zones within the facility, logistics robots, such as box and pallet conveyor systems, are among the most efficient ways to facilitate the flow of items in the warehouse. Electrified monorails are another transporting system that connects various locations within the warehouse. An electric motor propels these automated trolleys and travels over an electrified track fixed to the warehouse floor or suspended from the ceiling. Finally, businesses use autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) or automatic guided vehicles (AGVs) to move cargo between work zones.
Transportation:
Recently, the logistics industry has experienced the arrival of drones. They can ship and deliver consumer orders via air because of their technology. This approach, currently undergoing testing, would have benefits, including lower prices, quicker order deliveries (compared to traditional truck distribution), less highway traffic, and, thus, a significant decrease in pollution. In cities, this kind of service would be beneficial. However, it also has a lot of potential in lonely and distant rural locations.
