Service robots primarily operate in well-controlled indoor environments, such as warehouses and factories. However, with the development of sophisticated sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) systems, they are increasingly being deployed in outdoor settings with public traffic, particularly in last-mile delivery. Incorporating a diverse suite of sensors enables these robots to perceive their environment accurately and operate autonomously with minimal human supervision while maintaining high safety standards. Common sensors used for environmental awareness include cameras, radar, and LiDAR.
Cameras offer affordability, high resolution, and object classification capabilities, making them suitable for many applications. However, they perform poorly in low-visibility environments, such as during nighttime operations. Radar systems, on the other hand, excel in low-light conditions and accurately measure range and velocity but are relatively more expensive than cameras. LiDAR is the most expensive option, with its superior performance in object classification, even in challenging weather conditions and low light. Specific applications and requirements determine the type of sensor to be used.
Cleaning and disinfection robots have gained significant popularity in recent years. These robots can disinfect and clean their surroundings using various methods. The appeal of cleaning robots lies in their capacity to reduce the need for human labor in cleaning tasks while effectively minimizing the spread of germs and bacteria. They also offer cost-effective solutions compared to hiring human cleaners, making them an attractive business option. More than 50 service robot providers developed solutions to meet increased hygiene requirements after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like delivery robots, cleaning robots have various sensors, including cameras, LiDAR, and radar, to achieve autonomous mobility. The cleaning process can be classified into two categories: mechanical and non-mechanical. Mechanical cleaning involves physically removing dirt or biological materials through wiping and scrubbing. Non-mechanical cleaning methods, like ultraviolet (UV) lights or spraying disinfectants, come in indirect contact to kill biological materials. While mechanical cleaning is a traditional, less complicated, cost-effective method, it may struggle to reach hidden surfaces or corners. On the other hand, non-mechanical approaches can mitigate this issue by avoiding direct contact and can be more efficient in reducing microbial contamination. Nonetheless, they are more expensive and may encounter shadowing and distance challenges.
The advancements in autonomous mobility, enabled by sophisticated sensors and AI systems, have expanded their applications into outdoor environments, including last-mile delivery. Cleaning and disinfection robots have experienced significant demand, driven by their ability to reduce labor requirements and enhance hygiene standards. As the service robot industry evolves, technological advancements and innovative applications will further propel their growth, ultimately reshaping how we interact with robots daily.
