Dedicated to creating a cleaner, safer, and hyperconnected global food supply chain, PALIoT Solutions is at the forefront of pallet design innovation, next-generation IoT pallet tracking, and on-demand customer data analytics. The company focuses exclusively on the food distribution supply chain and caters to producers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. PALIoT leverages its management team’s vast experience in asset pooling and IoT technologies to address the lack of transparency in the way food is produced, packaged, distributed, and consumed today.

PALIoT uses IoT technologies to tackle the numerous problems associated with fresh produce shipments on wooden pallets, the dominant shipping platform used in the food supply chain. At the heart of its strategy is a reusable pallet made of engineered plywood and coated with pure polyurea, making it more durable and lightweight. PALIoT also blends anti-microbial and anti-fungal components into the coating, which help to eliminate pathogens (TR4, listeria, etc.) that might exist in the transportation process and ultimately keeps the food safe for consumption.

“Pallets are exposed to multiple environments, such as chillers, processing or distribution centers, and various retail locations. Incorporating IoT technology into each one of our pallets, we shine a light on every part of the food production and distribution channel,” says Paul Barry, founder and CEO of PALIoT Solutions.

PALIoT’s rental pallets are equipped with its proprietary sensor, the PALIoT ‘Integrated Module,’ which ensures complete asset protection via smart pallet tracking. PALIoT also integrates with customers’ ERP systems to collect granular data on individual food packages in a pallet in order to track them at each point in the supply chain, from the field to the retailer, and even to the individuals purchasing the product at retail. Along with location data, the sensor collects environmental data like the temperature, handling, and humidity at the product’s location.

The collected data is essential for products sensitive to storage conditions and significantly reduces losses due to food wastage and spoilage. Often, retailers find damaged pallets upon inspection and reject the entire truckload. One client approached PALIoT after suffering losses of $80 million per year from fresh produce rejected by retailers.

The meaningful data and insights provided by PALIoT were a game-changer for the client. They could monitor the quality of the products as they moved through the different parts of their supply chain. It helped the client identify areas where their products were getting damaged and reduced the costs associated with food wastage/spoilage. Additionally, profitability improved through the elimination of internal inefficiencies surrounding the manual counting and reporting of wood pallet movements the client was used to.

If pallets are at the heart of PALIoT’s operations, its proprietary asset pool management platform, PigeonHQ, is the brain. PigeonHQ provides customers with a dashboard to monitor their products in transit and the collected data processed in the AERON Cloud Engine in the back end. It uses this platform to integrate with its network of transportation carriers and communicate with them when pallets need to be moved or retrieved from retail locations.

PigeonHQ is also connected to PALIoT’s third-party operated service centers, where pallets are brought back from retailers, washed, inspected, and sent back to the next customer. This sophisticated system allows it to prioritize asset protection and eliminate pallet losses which continue to be the most pressing issue for any asset pooling business in the retail supply chain.

Designed to advance sustainable practices, PALIoT’s pallets are approximately 20 pounds lighter than its competitors’ and drive greater emission savings per mile compared to traditional pallets.

PALIoT has implemented a unique system to generate certified Carbon Credits to tackle unchecked Scope 3 emissions for customers and retailers. For the miles the pallet travels with a customer’s product on board, they can earn an accumulation of credits that PALIoT administers on their behalf. These credits raise their ESG profile, enable them to take a step closer to achieving their ‘net-zero’ targets, and realize obvious benefits for our planet.

PALIoT is currently building out a 210,000-square-foot pallet manufacturing facility with automation equipment worth in excess of $10 million in Aurora, CO. United by a desire to impact the planet positively, PALIoT’s team strives to set a new standard for food distribution through a combination of advanced technologies and sustainable practices.
